Amazon’s “Citadel” Series Gets A Renewal

Amazon Prime has ordered a renewal of “Avengers: Endgame” directors Joe and Anthony Russo’s mega-budget ensemble spy thriller series “Citadel” a full month-and-a-half before the first season launches according to THR.
Shot in Atlanta, London, Morocco, and Valencia, the budget for the series reportedly ballooned over $200 million following rounds of reshoots after half of the show’s creative team departed over creative differences.
Original showrunner Josh Appelbaum and director Brian Kirk exited and “Hunters” creator David Weil came on board to take over the show with a more grounded approach. Weil oversaw $75 million in reshoots for a show that already boasted a considerable $160 million budget.
As a result, it is reportedly on track to become the second-most-expensive show ever made behind only “The Rings of Power”. Weil will reportedly remain as showrunner for season two, with the Russos expected to direct multiple episodes – though an episode count has yet to be revealed.
Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Stanley Tucci and Lesley Manville lead the cast of the six-episode series which follows spies from all over the globe who come together to work for Citadel – a spy organization that has no allegiance to any country.
Eight years later, the group has been destroyed by a shadowy organization called Manticore. Madden and Chopra Jonas play agents who are reunited and must attempt to piece together what happened and who they really are.
Complicating matters is that their memories have been wiped and they have been living normal lives for years, unaware they’re actually elite spies. Tucci plays their former Citadel colleague who recruits the pair for a mission to stop Manticore, while Manville plays the villain of the piece – a determined woman working for dark forces.
The show is generating local language satellite series spinoffs in markets like India, Italy and Mexico that will see local stars in key roles. The Italian one has already been shot with the Indian one currently filming.
“Citadel” will launch with two episodes on April 28th with the remainder airing weekly through May.
