AMERICAN THEATRE | Theatrical Mustang: Migguel Anggelo’s Joy and Exhaustion

American Theatre is proud to be the venue for Theatrical Mustang, an independently produced podcast from actor-writer-activist Woodzick. Each month they’ll bring listeners interviews with unbridled talent and cultural trailblazers from across the country.

This month Woodzick interviews Migguel Anggelo, a Venezuelan American singer-songwriter, multidisciplinary performing artist, countertenor, dancer, actor, and painter. His work explores the intersections of his queer, Latino, and immigrant identities using music, physical theatre, dance, text, and costume. As a theatre creator, he has been awarded residencies to develop new works at MASS MoCA, the Kimmel Center, and Miami Light Project, among other organizations.

English With an Accent is an original musical production of dance-theatre, helmed by Anggelo and a company of 10 dancers, which will go up at Lincoln Center’s Clark Studio Theater, Dec. 1-3, in New York City. This also marks the project’s album release, in which we follow an immigrant caterpillar’s arrival in New York with hopes of becoming a butterfly. English With an Accent explores the attainability of the American dream through themes of freedom, safety, and self-worth. Directed, choreographed, and developed by Avihai Haham, the production boasts original music and lyrics by Anggelo and a longtime collaborator and music director, Jaime Lozano. You can watch the first music video from the album, “So Ironic,” here, and one for the song “The Wind” here.
