There’s nothing to fear in the quaint town of Barlowe, New York–except, that is, for the Harrower. The children wish this boogeyman was just an urban legend, but this purveyor of puritanical vengeance against the unrighteous is very real, and there’s no escape, because the Harrower seems unkillable, and spans generations, always returning…
BOOM! Studios recently released their new slasher comic HARROWER to the delight of all horror fans. We caught up with series writer, Justin Jordan, who’s best known for his original comic book series such as The Strange Talent of Luthor Strode and Spread, to talk about this series.
Horror News Network: Can you talk about what inspired you to create HARROWER?
Justin Jordan: I love slasher movies. Most of them are terrible, but I love them anyway. But I got to thinking about most of the things that make slasher movies work – how the police are useless, how slashers can appear out of nowhere, how there’s usually lore – and tried to build a story around WHY all those tropes happen.
It’s a love letter to eighties slasher movies, and hopefully, a good version of one at the same time.
Horror News Network: If you’re going to make media featuring a slasher, he best look the part. Can you talk about coming up with the unique look for the Harrower character?
Justin Jordan: Oh man, coming up with the look was one of the most fun bits, and Brahm really, no pun intended, killed it. The idea was to invoke images of both the undead and an old-time executioner, while also looking, well, cool.
Which Brahm executed (damn it, can’t help myself) pretty much flawless. Fun fact: the Harrower’s face was inspired by that time the Mythbusters put pigskin on a skull. It’s gross, you should check it out.
Horror News Network: Every slasher story needs a good final girl. Can you tell us about Jessica Brink?
Justin Jordan: Jessa is smart, strong, and in way over her head. She’s already experienced a significant loss when her brother died ten years before, and the book takes place on the anniversary of his death, very much not a coincidence, and so she’s already a little shook. It’s only going to get worse when her friends start dying.
That said, the Harrower doesn’t know what he’s in for.
Horror News Network: How has the collaboration been with series artist Brahm Revel on this book?
Justin Jordan: Amazing. It’s always a gamble working with someone you’ve never worked with before, but I’ve loved Brahm’s stuff since Guerillas, so I was excited. Happily, it’s been great. When an artistic collaboration really works, the artist understands not just what the writer wrote, but what they meant – what they are trying to accomplish. And Brahm does that and makes it even better.
Horror News Network: The series is slated to go four issues. Might we see more HARROWER in the future?
Justin Jordan: It’s a slasher. Of course, I have ideas for sequels. These four issues tell a complete story, but the set up means we can tell lots and lots of Harrower stories.
Horror News Network: In closing, what would you like to say to horror fans about the HARROWER series?
Justin Jordan: If you want a classic slasher with modern twists, I think you’ll dig Harrower.
