TV veteran Jeremy Podeswa has signed on to direct the pilot of the limited series “Blade Runner 2099” for Amazon Prime.
Podeswa will also executive produce the series alongside showrunner Silka Luisa (“Shining Girls”), newly joined writer Tom Spezialy (“The Leftovers”) and original “Blade Runner” filmmaker Ridley Scott.
The project is being produced by Scott Free and “The Expanse” producers Alcon Entertainment and marks the third major installment in the franchise following Scott’s original 1982 film “Blade Runner” and Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 sequel “Blade Runner 2049”.
With the action taking place fifty years after Villeneuve’s film, it’s not clear what the storyline or characters might be but earlier this week Jodie Comer was rumored to be in talks for the project.
Name any prestige series of the past twenty years, and chances are four-time Emmy nominee Podeswa has helmed at least one episode of it. His HBO work alone spans multiple episodes of “Game of Thrones,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “True Detective,” “Carnivale,” “Station Eleven,” “True Blood,” “Six Feet Under,” “The Newsroom,” “Rome,” “John from Cincinatti,” “The Pacific,” and “Here and Now”.
His non-HBO work includes the likes of “Homeland,” “The Borgias,” “The Tudors,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “The Walking Dead,” “Dexter,” “American Horror Story,” “The Mosquito Coast,” “Rubicon,” “Camelot,” “Ray Donovan,” “Tyrant,” “Nip/Tuck,” “Queer as Folk,” “Into the West,” “Wonderfalls,” “Weeds,” “The Riches,” “The Loudest Voice,” and “On Becoming a God in Central Florida”. His most upcoming work includes Apple’s “The New Look” and Netflix’s “The Three-Body Problem”.
Michael Green, Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Ben Roberts, Cynthia Yorkin, David W. Zucker and Clayton Krueger also executive produce the “Blade Runner 2099” series which is being fast tracked into production.
