Are the winds of fortune blowing?
Twisters–the sequel to the 1996 epic disaster flick Twister–this week landed a director and a release date, according to a report on Deadline.
Oscar-nominated Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) has signed on to helm the Universal Pictures feature, which is being scripted by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) and produced by Frank Marshall. The movie–expected to start filming in the spring–is set for a theatrical release July 19, 2024.
Sources said producers are hoping to bring back Twister star Helen Hunt for the sequel, which reportedly will follow the daughter she had with the character played by the late Bill Paxton.
The original Twister–directed by Jan de Bont from a screenplay by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin–stars Hunt, Paxton, Jami Gertz, Cary Elwes and Philip Seymour Hoffman as a group of amateur storm chasers trying to deploy a tornado research device during a severe storm in Oklahoma.
The film was a box office sensation, raking in $496 million worldwide on a budget of around $90 million–making it the second-highest grossing movie of 1996.
